The battle of Talana Hill was the first major clash of the Second Boer War. A frontal attack by defending British infantry supported by artillery drove Boers from a hilltop position in Dundee, but the British suffered heavy casualties including their commanding general Sir William Penn-Symons in the process on the 20th October 1899. 16th December 1838 the Zulu’s attacked the Laager with a force of 10 000 to 15 000 warriors against 150 defenders by the Ncome (Buffalo) River, which had led into, the bloodiest battle seen by the Voortrekkers and Zulus alike. Giving the battle its name The Battle of Blood River as the river flowed red with the blood of the fallen.
