Isandlwana, well known as the place where the British had suffered a major defeat, with losses amounting up to 1,500 troops which had included their native black allies of the Natal Native Contingent., at the hands of Zulu forces on the 22nd January 1879. Perhaps one of the most famous battles of the Anglo Zulu War was the defence of Rorke’s Drift 22/23 January 1879, where the British forces under overwhelming odds managed to hold off the Zulu onslaught, with 11 Victoria Crosses being awarded.
